You see, I grew up a scrawny kid. Your typical hardgainer, busting his butt in the gym and fighting for every ounce of muscle. At 19 years old after five years of consistent hard work, I gained about 25 pounds of muscle, but would still get asked,"Do you even lift bro?"

Then in my mid-20's while starting a family with two young kids and opening up a personal training studio that demanded all of my time, I gained 50 pounds of fat. I know eh? Go figure. I spent nearly every waking hour in the gym and was in the worst shape of my life. I was too busy taking care of everyone else, that I didn't have time to take care of myself. I was stressed, depressed, and didn't feel like myself at all.

Every time I would bend down to tie my shoes or lace up my hockey skates I could barely breath and it would take everything out of me.

You won't find any shirtless photos of me during that time. All of the pics of me at the beach were with my shirt on, because I was way too embarrassed of how much I had let myself go. My confidence was nowhere to be found. It's actually pretty painful for me to recall the emotions I was experiencing during that time of my life.
Sick and Tired Of Being Overweight
Like most other people, I struggled for years to lose that 50 pounds of excess fat. I'd be good for a few days, then cave into temptation. Good during the week, then lose it on the weekend. But I learned a lot of valuable lessons from those experiences. Not just for myself, but as a coach too. I could now relate to what my clients were going through and develop strategies that I otherwise would have never thought of.

Finally at 35 years young I had all of the pieces to make my dramatic transformation, lose the 50 pounds of fat, and give myself 6-pack abs for my 36th birthday. 

After achieving my fat loss goal, it was time to build some muscle. I had many of my colleagues tell me not to be afraid to lose my abs. "You've got to eat big to get big bro!"

So, I went through a muscle building phase where I gained 30 pounds over a 6 month period. Then, after going through a 16 week fat loss phase I realized it was mostly fat with a couple pounds of muscle. I then went through 5 more years of bulking and cutting where I gained 20 pounds each time. Then, after going through 12 week fat loss phases, I once again realized it was mostly fat with just a bit of muscle.

The last 12 week fat loss phase I've ever had to go through was 7 years ago. Since then I've stayed lean and take a very slow and steady approach to building muscle while staying in my sweet spot where I look, feel, and perform my best all year round.
